Where Mayfair Keeps Its Card Rooms

Mayfair’s gaming houses have never advertised themselves. They occupy townhouses and former ballrooms behind Park Lane and Curzon Street, identified by little more than a brass plate and a doorman who already knows the names of those arriving. Entry is by membership, or by the introduction of an existing member, and the clubs are unhurried about extending it. This register is written for readers who wish to understand that world before approaching it, rather than for anyone expecting to walk in off Piccadilly.

What distinguishes these rooms is restraint. There is no noise carried in from the street, no attempt to hurry a table along, and staff who treat a quiet evening as the point rather than a shortfall. Dining sits at the centre of the experience quite as much as the cards do, and several clubs are known for their kitchens before their tables. The hotels alongside them, the Park Lane and Piccadilly houses, belong to the same tradition, and most guests treat the two as a single evening.

Gaming Play takes place across the rooms of a Georgian townhouse rather than on a single floor, which keeps the classic tables close and conversational. This is a members’ club, so admission rests on membership or the introduction of a member.

Hotel Amenities The club has no hotel of its own. Its Park Lane address, however, is ringed by the grand houses of Hamilton Place and Piccadilly, and guests generally take a room in one of those and cross the road at the close of the evening.

Dining The kitchen is treated as the equal of the gaming rooms, with fine dining served in the townhouse’s formal rooms and a bar that stays civil rather than loud.

Atmosphere Georgian proportions, a staircase worth pausing on, and an unmistakable quiet. Hyde Park Corner is a minute away, yet almost nothing of the traffic reaches the drawing rooms.

Hotel Amenities There are no bedrooms at the club itself. Hertford Street sits between Park Lane and Shepherd Market, so the nearest choices run from the large Hyde Park Corner hotels to smaller Mayfair houses a few streets north.

Dining The club restaurant is used quite as much for dinner before play as after it, and the bar keeps the same measured pace as the salons around it.

Atmosphere Hertford Street is narrow, residential and easily missed, which suits the club well. Within, the mood is closer to a private house entertaining friends than to anything resembling a public gaming floor.

Hotel Amenities No rooms are attached to the casino. Berkeley Street runs from Berkeley Square down towards Green Park, which places a good spread of Mayfair and Piccadilly hotels within a few minutes on foot.

Dining Dining and drinks are handled in the late lounge alongside the tables, which keeps an evening in one room rather than sending guests out into Berkeley Street between courses.

Atmosphere The ballroom origins still govern the space, the ceiling height doing most of the work, and the room fills slowly rather than all at once. Green Park lies a short walk away for the journey home.

Gaming Founded in 1828 and still the most private of the Mayfair houses, Crockfords keeps much of its play in separate rooms rather than on a shared floor. Entry follows membership, and the club is unhurried about granting it.

Hotel Amenities The club offers no accommodation of its own. Curzon Street lies a short walk from the Park Lane and Piccadilly hotels, and from the quieter addresses off Half Moon Street, so guests seldom need transport at the end of the night.

Dining Dinner is served in the club’s own rooms, with service pitched to be attentive and very nearly invisible; the wine list receives the same care as the tables.

Atmosphere Nearly two centuries on Curzon Street have left the club with little to prove. Conversation stays low, the rooms are small by design, and discretion is a house habit rather than a marketing line.
